Disc Nucleoplasty y is an advanced minimally invasive procedure used to reduce disc pressure in patients suffering from discogenic (disc related) backache.
The procedure involves introducing a special probe through the needle into the center of the disc where a number of channels are created to remove tissue from the nucleus, which relieves pressure. As pressure is relieved, pain is reduced, consistent with the clinical results of earlier percutaneous discectomy procedures.
Candidates for Disc Nucleoplasty
You are a candidate for disc nucleoplasty if:
• If you are suffering from chronic back pain, back fatigue and rest, medications, medical interventions like steroid injections and physical therapy has not been of help.
• If you suffer from disc herniation
• If you suffer from contained spinal disc herniation, i.e, pain radiating down the leg or arm accompanied by back pain not improving with medication and physical therapy.
• Inflammation and chronic pain, particularly in cases where the nerve roots are pinched or irritated.
Disc nucleoplasty spine surgery is performed in an advanced surgical center under fluoroscopic (x-ray) guidance and is done under local anesthesia with sedation.
During the procedure, an introducer needle is inserted into the sidewall of the disc. Then the nucleoplasty device is passed through the needle and positioned in the internal portion of the disc under x-ray guidance. Once in proper position, the device is used to cut a small portion of disc material out of the center of the disc and then heat the tissue immediately around the area where tissue has just been removed. When done, the device and needle are removed and an adhesive bandage is placed over the needle insertion site.
There might be a mild flare-up of your back pain for a few days after the procedure. You will be advised to use ice packs initially. Some patients might need extra medication during this time. Other patients feel better right away or within days and actually take less medication. Almost everyone is back to at least their usual level of pain within a week.
• Outpatient procedure done under local anaesthesia and thus no risks associated with general anaesthesia
• Procedure time is less than an hour
• Minimally invasive
• No scars
• Minimal pain and discomfort to the patient
• Quick recovery
• Quick relief
