Knee Replacement surgery in India

Knee replacement surgery in India

Knee replacement is surgery for people with severe knee damage. Knee replacement can relieve pain and allow you to be more active. Your doctor may recommend it if you have knee pain and medicine and other treatments are not helping you anymore.

There are four main types of knee replacement surgery:

 Total knee replacement

 Partial or unicompartmental knee replacement

 kneecap replacement (patellofemoral arthroplasty)

 complex or revision knee replacement.

Partial Knee Replacement – The Unicompartmental Knee

The Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure used to relieve arthritis in one of the knee compartments in which the damaged parts of the knee are replaced. Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty surgery may reduce post-operative pain and have a shorter recovery period than a total knee replacements.[Also, UKA may have a smaller incision because the implants may be smaller.

The Unicompartmental Knee procedures is an evolving topic. Issues of location and amount of disease as well as the amount of deformity present are important considerations. Newer technologies such as computers, robots and custom guides have been introduced to this concept in attempts to improve outcomes.

Total Knee Replacement

What is a Total Knee Replacement?

A total knee replacement is a prosthesis that is used to replace a knee joint that is affected by arthritis.

Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is the gold standard when conservative treatment for arthritis of your knee has failed. This procedure involves resecting the ends of the bones of the knee and replacing them with a combination of metal and plastic. The procedure is one of the most successful of all surgical procedures. On average, TKR provides 90-95% pain relief and has a 1- 2% complication rate. Approximately 90% of replaced knees will be satisfactory twenty years after surgery.

Bilateral Knee Replacement,

Double knee replacement surgery may involve one surgery or two surgeries. When both knees are replaced at the same time, the surgery is known as a Simultaneous Bilateral Knee Replacement. When each knee is replaced at a different time, it is called a Staged Bilateral Knee Replacement. Either surgery may involve any combination of total knee replacement or partial knee replacement.

Bilateral knee replacement, both of your knees will be replaced during the same surgery. The primary advantage of a simultaneous procedure is that there is only one hospital stay and one rehabilitation period to heal both knees.

However, rehabilitation may be slower, as it’s more difficult to use both knees at the same time. In fact, many people who undergo simultaneous bilateral knee surgery need assistance at home as they’re recovering. This type of procedure also takes longer to perform. Simultaneous bilateral knee replacement typically takes three to four hours to complete, while staged bilateral knee replacement only takes two hours. Since simultaneous bilateral knee replacement requires more time and heavier doses of anesthesia, there is an increased risk for complications. The surgery isn’t recommended for those with heart conditions or lung disease. These high-risk groups may experience heart problems or excessive blood loss during and after surgery.

Kneecap replacement

The typical symptoms of a person in need of patellofemoral joint replacement are pain going up and down stairs, pain squatting, pain getting up from a chair, pain bending and straightening the knee against resistance, along with pain walking.

A knee cap joint replacement is a much smaller operation than a total knee replacement. The incision is much smaller and all knee ligaments are preserved. The recovery from a patellofemoral joint replacement is the quickest of all partial knee replacements.

If only your kneecap is damaged, an operation called a patellofemoral replacement or patellofemoral joint arthroplasty can be performed. This involves less major surgery with a faster recovery time. However Kneecap replacement is not suitable for most people with osteoarthritis.
